Rolex Daytona Vintage

Published by Stefan Rihs

Hi Stefan

hope you are well! In Central HK we have a new vintage luxury watch shop. They have a vintage Rolex Daytona for sale (a golden one, model # 6241, please refer to the follwing link http://www.thevintageconcept.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=40&product_id=446 ). Asking price is around EUR 250'000!! I was quite shocked about the price since I always thought the steel ones are the expensive ones! I could remember that Max has one and he told me you are the expert to talk to in case I would like to get some market inside for such kind of watches (I have not much clue about the vintage watch market at all)! I tried to consultate the internet as well, but it is rather difficult to generate more information about this watch and the pricing of it. Maybe do you have any idea? I am not interested to buy this one in particular, but the shop has very nice watches in general and I might buy one day a more simple one. My guess would be, if they totally over-charge this vintage Rolex, then they might have also too high prices for the more common ones!

My very best,

Stefan

Dear Stefan Thank you, we are ...

Dear Stefan Thank you, we are all doing fine. I hope these words find you well as well! This particular Rolex 6241 is also called "Paul Newman". In 1966 when this watch was released, the in store price was about sFr.1900.-Rolex sold hardly any watches, because it had a manually winding movement, which at that time nobody wanted them anymore, because they started to make the self-winding movements for less money. After Paul Newman was wearing this model in one of his movies, the watch started to sell better, but not enough for Rolex, therefore they stopped producing. It is very hard to find an original "Paul Newman" which is 100% authentic (no new parts). The asking price I find a bit high, if you are lucky there are some models between 100-150'000 Euro. Before buying you have to have it checked by an official Rolex Dealer for authenticity! I checked the prices for the other vintage watches, you can find them for similar prices here in Switzerland as well. Regards, Stefan
